2001 The 2001 annual Vaughan Evans Memorial Lecture was given during the Maritime History Beyond 2000: Visions of Sea and Shore conference on Thursday 14 December 2001. It was titled 'Encompassing Oceania: Beach Crossings for a Pacific Maritime History' by Emeritus Professor Greg Dening (Melbourne University). Due to illness Professor Denning was not able to present the lecture himself and the AAMH President Dr Mark Staniforth read the paper in Greg's absence. The lecture was well received and AAMH members will be able to read a text version in a future issue of The Great Circle. |

2000 In 2000 the Vaughan Evans Memorial Lecture was given by Professor Lewis R. (Skip) Fischer on Wednesday 29 November 2000 at St. Mark's College, North Adelaide. The lecture was given during the joint Australian Institute for Maritime Archaeology/ Australasian Society for Historical Archaeology (AIMA/ASHA) Conference. Skip Fischer is Professor of Maritime History at Memorial University of Newfoundland. He is editor-in-chief of The International Journal of Maritime History, editor of The Northern Mariner/Le Marin du nord, and series editor of Research in Maritime History. A specialist on nineteenth century merchant shipping, he is the author of more than 200 books, articles and chapters on maritime topics. |

1999 Dr Kathy Abbas gave the 1999 Vaughan Evans Memorial Lecture at 6pm on Tuesday 5 October 1999 in the ANZ Theatre at the Australian National Maritime Museum in Sydney, NSW. Dr Abbas is the President of the Rhode Island Marine Archaeology Project (RIMAP) that has been investigating British vessels scuttled at Rhode Island during the Revolutionary War. The lecture was titled Is it Endeavour? and she presented recent findings from the fieldwork on wrecks believed to include James Cook's HM Bark Endeavour. Dr Abbas has subsequently published a paper in The Great Circle (Vol. 23. No. 1. pp. 3-20) titled "Newport and Captain Cook's Ships". See: Abbas, D.K. 2001.
